I’ve been searching for a large map for some time now. A vintage map. A large vintage map that would fit into a frame I already have and hang stylishly in my kitchen. There are a few problems with my search however: 1) Large vintage maps are hard to find. 2) They can be quite pricey. 3) True vintage maps that are not already framed and matted are usually falling apart.
Since I haven’t had much luck on the vintage front, I decided to buy a modern plastic map to use in the meantime.
I found a large map at Half Priced Books and trimmed it so the map would fit into my thrift store painted frame.
I like the look of a framed map in the kitchen but am still on the lookout for a vintage replacement. Or I may just buy a paper updated map instead and forget about the vintage part. The problem with my plastic map is that it doesn’t lay completely smooth and the light reflects on it’s shiny surface. So even though it’s water proof and messy kid finger proof, I still think a paper map would be a better choice.
So what about you? Any creative cartographers out there with great resources for large vintage maps?

unfortunately I don’t know any so I am not much help but I think the one that you have works.
Thanks, Laura! I really do like the map in my kitchen but wish it didn’t have such a shiny finish. (That’s just me being picky!)
K, so I still have a bunch of maps from my map wall. Let me know if you want to have any of them! Love the one you have, though. It looks great in the frame.

Thanks, Beth! I just may take you up on that. (Love the map wall in your sons’ room!)
I am afraid I cannot be any help in your search for a paper map but I think the one you have framed looks very nice. It adds beautiful colors to the room and looks great with the color of the table. Hope you find the one you want but don’t worry about the one you have because it looks good.——– Shannon
Thanks, Shannon! Yes, this one is actually growing on me.
The map looks great in your kitchen! If you are looking for paper ones, I ordered the one for my son’s room from All Posters.com. (I should go back and update my post with that.) They have a pretty good collection and usually have some kind of sale going on. They come in a variety of sizes too. Hope that helps! Thanks for stopping by to comment! Enjoy the rest of your week!

Thanks, Shelley! I’ll have to check them out next time. (It’s always great to find out the behind the scenes sources!)
Have you tried rubbing some stain on new maps? It is super cute…I just rubbed some on the bright aqua globes (post on my blog), anyhow it really gives them a great look.
