My Blue Stripe

Usually, my DIY projects tend to be finished randomly about the house.  Some idea will pop into my head and I’ll just have to follow through.  One day I’ll paint the bathroom and the next I’ll do a project for the kitchen.  That system works well if the house is basically done.  My home, on the other hand, is transitioning from one look to another and basically needs an overhaul in every room.  So the problem with me skipping around is that I don’t have a single room totally completed.  This Summer though,  I decided to approach my DIY list in a more organized fashion and attempt to work on one room at a time.  (We’ll see how long that lasts…)

My living room is currently the victim to my redecorating focus at the moment.  It’s an open, two-story room in the middle of our home that makes it difficult to paint.  Last week I had given the fireplace wall a bold injection of chalkboard paint (see here) which caused the side wall to look a little mousy and plain by comparison.  I wanted to bring a bit of blue to the space but didn’t want a solid colored wall.  I like stripes but wanted something a little different than the popular (and quite prevalent) two-color horizontal stripes.

I ended up deciding on trying one chunky stripe across the wall at eye level.  Enough to bring a little interest and color to the space but not too much to overwhelm it.

I measured and drew two pencil lines and then taped them off.  You can see the unattractive before in this picture.  (The ottoman’s days are numbered.)  And a pile of clean laundry on the sofa.  Let’s just say I’m a multi-tasker!

The little blue stripe.  (I believe it’s somewhat straight.)

Here is the progress so far.  (There is still quite a bit of brown but the speakers and armoire are next on the list.)

So what about you?  Any Summer stripes in your life?

  3. It looks very good. Not the typical approach to stripes and I love it

  4. I like the mirror over the pastel blue stripe, great composition and color/shape contrast. Do you like plants? I’m picturing an ivy plant overr your armoire with the leaves cascading over to the side to add some softness to the brown
