A toasty, golden grilled cheese sandwich.
One of the simpler (and quite yummy) foods of childhood.
But what happens when you’re all grown up but still crave that cheesy comfort? How about throwing together a grown-up version of that tasty treat?
So, you may be wondering, “Why is this girl posting about making a sandwich? Doesn’t everyone possess a certain level of skill in basic sandwich assembly?” But the answer, the moral of the story, talented readers, is not just about crafting a super sandwich. It’s about re-imagining something that you’ve outgrown. Repurposing an outdated piece of furniture or switching the paint color on a wall you no longer care for. It’s about changing, fixing or making things that support who you are and how you live today.
Now, back to the sandwich.
In my quest for creating something a bit more sophisticated, I thought I would start with selecting a good bread. A chunky wheat (that wasn’t too seedy) seemed liked a decent choice.
I then gathered up a few simple ingredients. Tomato, avocado, smoked gouda and prosciutto. I’ve been on an avocado kick lately and just love the taste of a good smoked gouda cheese. I usually like tomatoes on my sandwiches, too. The prosciutto was a new ingredient for me. I had wanted to try this thinly sliced Italian ham and thought it would be the perfect addition to my new creation.
After building the sandwich, I buttered the two outside pieces of bread and browned it on the stove. A few minutes later, I was biting into toasted gooey goodness. Not bad, for a grown-up grilled cheese sandwich.
So what about you? Have you recently repurposed something that desperately needed a little updating? Or do you care to share your own totally awesome version of a grown-up sandwich?
