This fab furniture transformation began with another Craig’s List adventure.
I have been carefully planning my office makeover for a couple of years now. Yes, it’s true.
I keep changing my mind about layout and specific furniture components. Do I go the route of built-ins, DIY or retail?
And don’t get me started on color themes or artwork.
The space in our home that is designated for the office, is an open area directly by the front door. So it’s the very first thing you see as you enter our home. And it’s been an unfinished embarrassment for quite some time.
The unit actually looks a bit better in the photo than it did in real life. The wood color wasn’t consistent and there were paint spots and duct tape marks across the surface. And the hardware style was a bit too delicate for the chunky proportions of the cabinet.
It was a bit homely, but nothing a little makeover couldn’t fix.
I said good-bye to the current hardware and ordered brass pulls from the Martha Stewart line through Home Depot. I had them deliver the hardware directly to the nearby store, so I didn’t have to pay shipping costs.
I’m slightly obsessed with the new pulls. They really give the cabinet such a different look. I find myself opening and closing the file drawers for no apparent reason other than to use the shiny new hardware.
I styled a little vignette for the photo shoot with second-hand books and a foxy salt shaker from Target. For the next step, the file cabinet will actually become part of a DIY desk. Now, I just need to get going on the other components. (Before I change my game plan again, that is…)
Have you ever had a room makeover, years in the transition? Or brought a tired-looking file cabinet into its glory days? Or become slightly obsessed with brass hardware?
